Wheel bearing tricks?
29 Jun 2013 21:44
Hi,
This is my first post to KZ rider,
I am changing to cast 7 spoke wheels on my '79 KZ1000. I bought two separate wheels on E-Bay. The front was from another kz1000 so it fit right on. The rear I bought was from a 750 so my 1000 axle is too big. Question I have is, Can I just get a 750 rear axle and use it or do I have to change the wheel bearings in the 750 wheel to accept my 1000 axle? If I DO have to change the bearings, what is the best way to do that? Any help greatly appreciated.

Wheel bearings are relatively easy to change. In your situation, a custom axle may have to be made if you can't find bearings to fit the wheels mentioned.
www.goallballs.com
is one place I've bought bearings through.
Old bearings can be removed by driving them out, a propane torch can be used to carefully expand the wheel hubs, and then use a hammer and punch to drive the bearing out(moving the punch around the entire bearing, so it won't bind up).Check for snap rings, as some Kawasaki's have them as a safety retainer for the bearings
When getting ready to install the new bearing(s), put them in a freezer for an hour or so, as the bearing(s) will slightly shrink in size. If the hub is warm, the bearing may almost drop in, perhaps needing a slight tap with a block of wood to seat it.
Never hit the inner part of the wheel bearing, as it may damage the race, always apply force on the outer part of the bearing. A large socket that fits the outer race works best.

I agree with MFolks advice. Also-if you can read the bearing # stamped/printed on the bearing you may be able to go to a bearing mnfr website and cross-reference the outer diameter you need for the 750 wheel with the inner diameter you need for the 1000 axle. With any luck it will be a common size !

I suspect not-thinking it will have a lot of play in the axle slot in the swingarm if the 750 axle is smaller in diameter than the 1000 axle.

Some people use the KZ650 axle on their 750 twins, and it's the same way, 650 axle being smaller than 750 twin axle.
