Fork travel limiter.
18 Jun 2013 00:22
Saturday night pickin on a GXSR600 I launched real hard front end
came up way to high so slammed the throttle closed came down and
the front fender hit my oil cooler.
So is there a way to limit the compression travel on the forks
or just rake the neck and move the fender out of the way ?
BTW the dude on the gixxer was pissed at me when we got back to the bar.

This does happen if the cooler is mounted too low. On the Gpz550's, it won't contact, normally, but in order to install a steering damper, I had to lower the cooler about an inch. Then it will hit on very rare occasions. Did your bike originally come with a cooler? Is there a way to mount it slightly higher?

Cooler and line's are factory "83 GPz750 set up
so that set the mounting point.
My fork tube's are slid about an inch up in the tree's
so that don't help none.
Waiting on a call back from a buddy I think I'm just gonna rake
the neck about 3 to 5 degree's.

Yeah, it's probably that extra inch on the forks being slid up that's causing it. The thing that limits the fork travel is when the spring binds.
Because of that, on one bike, I cut the spring down about 25%, then made up some of the difference with a PVC spacer. This stiffened up the front end, while also lowering it slightly so I no longer had to slide them up higher in the clamps. This also has the benefit that the forks are slightly more compressed which reduces the side play at the fork seal, so the seals will hopefully last longer. (There is a longer section of fork tube in the slider giving less leverage to side play at the fork seal.)

Cutting down the springs will make them stiffer, and reduce travel slightly.
Replacing them with full-length, stiffer springs will not reduce the travel.

Because that's easier than relocating the oil cooler?

I've got about 1/2 inch I could move it up then the
lower tree would hit it.
I want the front about 3 inch lower any way's so raking
the frame will allow me to do that.
I talked to my buddy Shaun at Austin Moto today he said he
can do the rake so gonna ride down Sat. morning and see what we can work out.
