Rebuilding forks-what is this? KZ650H2

I am changing my fork seals and decided to pull the whole thing apart to make sure all was ok. This part fell out of my forks and I have no idea where it goes. No schematic I have seen has anything like it. I have a 1982 KZ650 H2.

Lots of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams, part names, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc. Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.

You're right, I also don't see anything like that in the schematic. Is there one of those is each of the fork legs, or was there only one? Are you positive the forks are the originals to the bike? Ed

If located above the springs, underneath the fork tube cap, might be owner- installed pieces intended to stiffen the suspension and reduce sag.

I agree w Patton. My bike has the same forks - that is not a stock part.

Excuse me, but Martin, would that pic happen to be from some sort of tutorial on servicing forks that has pics and labels? Because I'm busting mine down this weekend and something like that would be awesome to have around.

It's a photo of my forks. The 440's are probably similar, except for the fork caps - the 440 has circlips, whereas the CSR's are threaded.

Thanks guys. It seems like everything should work fine without it. It was in both forks, but I could not figure out what it was for. This has been a real learning experience for me. Hopefully I can finish them tonight.
