1974 Z1A Frame numbers
09 May 2013 15:00
Hello, I am new to this forum. I have a 1974 Z1A 9oo that has been made into a chopper. Other than the steering head, does anyone know where I can find the frame numbers? Thanks

The only place Kawasaki put frame VIN's was on the steering head.

The frame number is only located on the steer tube. If it has the original engine, the engine number will be ~200 off of the frame number. That's normal. Kawasaki ran engine cases out numerically but pulled some for replacement/warrany etc. So the numbers don't match exactly after the first few hundred bikes.
If you think you have the original engine but no number on the frame, I can check a database to see if the engine number and title (frame number) are the same range.

Thanks Kidkawie. Yes the engine number is fine. The bike is titled in Mi. where I live and was titled in New Jersey where I bought it. The frame no. must have been destroyed or remove during the customizing of the bike. The steering head and tube is all stainless, the head has only Z1 stamped on it. I am assuming it was an aftermarket part sold in stainless. The engine Numbers are Z1E 29995. Thanks again, Greg
PS....I tried to find out anything but came up blank.

Interesting. I didn't know stainless could be welded to mild steel. Ya learn something every day. Ed

Hello again Ed. I was looking at the wrong piece. I don't see any markings on the steering head at all. No label either. This bike was customed to fit longer forks. Anyways thanks for the fast response. I don't think that will be a problem as 3 different states issued a title for the bike. Would like to have known though. Greg

The vin number has m9 digits. They are 5Z1F29921. Theses numbers were found behind the carbs. The title number is 166a1630335 F, when I bought the bike it had a new Jersey title free and clear. The bike was registered and plated. Now I am selling the bike but I don't know if I will have a problem. The bike does not run.

There is no M on the vin, that was a typo. Forgot to mention I have a clear title (Michigan) on the bike.

Z1F (F=frame) 29921, engine 29995.
Those would be considered "matching numbers".
So your title and numbers are good, the problem is the steer tube was replaced. That will drive down the value of the bike alot.
I can assure you there is only one spot on the frame that has numbers, the steer tube. I've restored 2 of these already, took the frames down to bare metal. If there's numbers on the frame elsewhere, someone stamped those in.

Thanks a million Ed. I feel much better about the bike when I sell it. Rest assured I do not doubt what you say on the stamping location for the frame. You have saved me a lot of grief. Thanks again Greg

Hello again Ed,
Can you tell me the approximate location of the frame numbers on the steering tube? I saw a couple pictures on line and it looks as though they are outside wll of the tube on the left side of the tube if you were sitting in the seat. I figured I would ask you first before I start taking off the paint. I have been studying pictures of 74 Z frames online and they sure look similar (outside of the customizing). Thanks again Ed
