Air Leak from spokes
27 Apr 2013 17:55
Hello everyone,
I have an 82 750csr twin and today after replacing the clutch I come home, and a short time later the rear tire is flat. I pump it up and find that the air is leaking out of the spokes. Is this a tubeless tire? or does it have a tube in it? I need to get it fixed ASAP, like tomorrow so that I can get back to work on monday.
They are spoked rims if that makes any difference.
Thanks
John Jones

Pretty much all spokes wheels have tubes. Get yourself a tube and replace it or have a shop do it for you.

does it make any difference that the tire says tubeless on it? Unfortunatly there are no shops open today (sunday) so I'm gonna have to go without it until tomorrow when I can get it to the stop.

All tires these days are tubeless tires. It's just that spoked rims require a tube.

How old are the tires ?
Be careful , they may look OK but be hard and dry and not be able to grab the road in a corner.
I have a friend that I could not convince that he needed to change his 25 year old tires on a bike that he had just bought last year.
I watched him take a corner at about 15 mph and the bike slid out from under him, the tires looked real nice but had gotten hard over the years , you could see the vertical claw marks where the road tried to grab the tire to no avail.
I heard that the maximum time from manufacturing is 7 years, but even that sounds like too long to me.
Also, don't forget to buy a new rubber bands that covers the spokes, they're cheap.

You need to replace the tube and the belly band that covers the spokes. If the tire is old replace it while you have it off. It does not matter if the tire is marked "Tubeless" you must use tubes on your spoked wheels. Ed

Thanks for all of the replies. The tire is 3 or 4 years old and not many miles on it, I"ve been riding on it for a few thousand miles now and it is in pretty good shape, not perfect but good enough to just put a tube in and keep going. I'm going to take it to the shop tomorrow and have them change the band and tube. I dont have the tools to change it here and it's just easier for me to go and spend however much it costs to just get it done, the tools to do it right cost more than having someone else do it lol

I bought my Pirelli Sport Demons at Ronayers.com. (I am not affiliated with them in any way, just a customer.) Ed

Some bike tires have a maunufacture date on them...There will be a small rectangular box with 4 digits in it. First two numbers are the week of year and last two the year tire was manufactured. Unless I have that turned around but it should be obvious in which order they should be in.
1980 LTD (changed over the years), 1979 LTD (being rebuilt), 1977 KZ turbo and various KZ's in various states of build. KLX110
