Swingarm swap was created by kawiman636
I am thinking about starting a KZ1000 project bike and am daydreaming possible ideas for the bike. I was wondering what dimensions I need to know in order to choose a suitable swingarm swap. The main reason I am wondering is because I would like to have a 160 to 180 rear tire on the bike just because I like the look. Also I was wondering because I thought a single sided swingarm would be really unique. I was looking at a 98 Triumph T595 swingarm. I do realize that almost any swap will require some modification, I just want to make sure it will be mountable at the pivot point. Sorry for rambling lol

what year is your kz 1000?

you are typically looking for something in the 9.250 width at the pivot.

are you wanting to go mono shock?

there have been several single sided swingarms installed on kz's.

I haven't bought a KZ1000 yet, just doing some research ahead of time. I will go to a mono shock if I do get a single sided swingarm that fits. Do you know if there is a particular single sided swingarm that fits the best? I really appreciate your help. I don't like to start on a project until I do a lot of research first.

Porchev914, I believe, used a Triumph SSSA on his Kz. He ended up widening the frame to get it to fit. Ducati arms fit with some work but the mono-shock linkage makes them more work than they're worth. The most popular arm is the VFR, particularly the 750 version. I don't remember the width of them but they are somewhat close to the space available in a Kz frame and they use a conventional suspension linkage.

I believe from other forums that if you want to go for a bigger swingarm the frame you would want is a KZ1000 ST as it's a lot wider at the pivot than your average chain driven KZ as it's a shaft drive which allows for the secondary gearbox. And if you wanted chain drive to can always convert the ST engine to chain.

After looking over this info I think I decided on the 94' - 97' VFR swingarm. I compared the pivot point widths to the one on my bike and it gives me some extra space, which from what I have read is good just in case you seen to shift it to one side or the oother using spacers for wheel alignment.

Thanks...you would think that there would be a similar post somewhere listing all the front ends that will fit....but what I am finding is smatterings of info in posts all over the place.

From what I am seeing the ZX9R and ZX7R fronts are the most desirable as they have the longest, and closts in length forks to the original KZ1000.

I have seen that one table a few times, and forgot to subcribe to the post, that shows a list of different forks and their attributes, but its a bit harder to sift through.

ETA: I'm only new, but I would think that maybe the mods could create a sticky post at the top of the chassis forum, with this list, and maybe we can add more candidates with info provided by other board members....just a suggestion.
