Z-1 Cush Drive vs. KZ 1000 Cush Drive

I'm looking into buying a cush drive with a sprocket spacer on it for a wider tire. The seller says it came from a KZ900 drag bike. The Z-1 and the KZ900 definitely takes a different rear sprocket than the '77 - '80 KZ1000, but my question is this:

Will a Z-1 / KZ900 cush drive function properly in a KZ1000 hub? I don't mind buying a sprocket with the Z-1 pattern but I don't want drum brakes. Anybody ever tried a swap?? Thanks

The z1/kz900 uses the separate blocks like in your picture while the 77-78 1000 with wire wheel has them all hooked together,not sure if it really makes a difference or not though ;)
Those sprocket bolts don't look right to me anyway ;)

good point jimbo...i remember having the 1000 ones that were one piece in my hand and thinking they are the same...updated... just easy to handle and wont fall out when you are trying to lift the whole gig up to slide the axle etc...not sure though of size and tab etc

Ive had a whole pile of different drives and there are more then at least 3 differnt styles during the 73-80 run. I dont think they are that interchangable. The diameter where they sit against the wheel is different and if you dont have the one made for that wheel then its not going to work. Last year I was trying to find one for a laced disk brake rear and it was different then a mag and a drum wheel.

Well, sounds like there are more differences than I realized. Might not be a good purchase if I can't find a good disc brake hub to lace up. I think the first disc brake hub was the '77 KZ1000. The 900 LTD had disc brakes but with mag wheels. I'm guessing that the 77/78 disc brake hubs are probably unique to those two years. I guess I can't use the spacer alone either because the sprocket bolt pattern wouldn't work on a carrier that would match the right hub. Thanks for the info.

OK, memory / knowledge check ;)

I see that the rear coupling assy (sprocket holder) is in fact unique to the '77 and '78 1000 A models (spoked wheels). The '79 and '80 MKII coupling assy is common with the '77 thru '80 LTD 1000 models (18" vs. 16" but all mag wheels).

So, does anybody know what the difference is???
