Touring gear to fit KZ1000?

Hi all,

I have 3 Z's. A '73 Z1 that I am nearing completion of the restoration, a '76 KZ900 that is quite nice, and a very nice '77 KZ1000.

I really need a bike with hard bags that I can tour with. My plan had been that when the '73 Z1 was finished, I would sell the KZ900 and KZ1000, then get a modern bike like a Vstrom.

My wife has mandated that 3 bikes is the limit, and I am having a hard time letting go of the Z's.

So here's the thing.... I'd like to set up my KZ1000 for touring. But figuring out a setup for hard bags is difficult. Anyone out there with a KZ1000 police bike that could send me pics of the hard bag system so I could manufacture something? Or does anyone know of andy manufactured systems to fit a 77 KZ1000.

I'm looking for a locking hard bag and top box system.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Ross

I was hoping someone on the forum would be kind enough to post pics of mounting brackets and hard bags so I could construct some myself.

Presumably referring to construction of the mounts, but not construction of the bags, as it is rare to hear of constructing diy hard bags.

Typically, each particular hard bag design -- and there are several -- will require its own unique mount design.

The Vetter bags and mount that fit large Kaw fours appear on ebay from time to time.
As do other bag/mount iterations.

kawasaki.com doesn't list a '77 Police, but the 1978 KZ1000-C1 (Police 1000) section has a parts diagram for GUARDS/SADDLE BAGS/WINDSHIELD.

If needed, there's a link in my sig for help navigating kawasaki.com

Ross,

Take a look at some of the aluminum bag systems that the adventure bike guys use.

www.jesseluggage.com/klr600-650.html

www.motomachines.com/Alu-Standard_c_26.html

www.happy-trail.com/

These bags are very well made and will last through several bikes.

If you like black luggage the Givi bags are great. I have a set on my FJ1200 and my wife has a set on her TDM.

www.giviusa.com/

Givi sells the hardware needed to make a custom mount system work on any bike.

893cv,

Thanks. I will certainly take a look at current stuff. The issue is, designing and constructing the mounting bracketry, to fit the stock mounting points. The bikes I have are really nice stock machines and I am not willing to modify them. The bike I tour on is my 77 KZ1000.

I had a look ad the 78 police bike parts fiche to see if that would help. No joy. The police bike frame has completely different mounting points.

I'm hoping someone here can post pics of the mounts from something like an old Vetter setup. Then I could construct a mounting frame, bearing in mind that I'd likely use a modern set of hard bags and top box to be attached.

Ive been using a cheap set of soft side panniers. But I need something that locks, and locks onto the bike.

Cheers,
Ross

Several years ago, Samsonite and Krause also offered some good aftermarket saddle bags with bike-specific mounting hardware.

If you're dead set on hard bags, that's fine, but they are not necessary for touring. I rode a lot of tours on a KZ1000, and you can tie a lot of stuff on the seat behind you. I actually tied 140 LBs of luggage on the USA 4 corners tour using bungees. Now if the wife is along, then yes you need bags most likely, otherwise it can be done easily without the addition of any hard bags.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
