sprockets? was created by lowtorq
I have a 78 kz 1000 and I want to replace the chain and sprockets. The motor I have in it is an 82 J. I think the stock setup for the 78 is 16 front and 33 rear. Not exactly sure what the stock setup for the 82 is, maybe 14 front and 39-44 rear? I am also running an 18" rear wheel right now but I will be switching to a 16" as soon as this one wears out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I do mostly highway driving but I still like the get up and go.

thanks Shane

Stock front sprocket for the 82 KZ1000J is 15 tooth according to buykawasaki.com, but it don't say what size the rear sprocket is.

The 82 KZ1000M CSR uses a 15 front 39 rear according to them though, so the J might be the same.

If you are replacing chain and sprockets why not get 530 chain and matching sprockets from Z1 Enterprises?

530 chain is lighter and can be had in the same strength as 630. check chain 'rating' before you buy. maybe go aluminum rear sprocket too. Pitch of 530 is less so your sprockets will have more teeth for same diameter and ratio.

you can also run a 530 chain with 520 sprockets to free up some more power.

i thought stock on the j models were 15front and 37rear?

i also agree with swaping to the 530 chian. i run a 530 D.I.D chain with a 16 front sprocket and a 46 on the rear using a 17 inch wheel. the 530 is much lighter,it gives you a little more room for clearance when runing a bigger back wheel, it is cheaper and easier to find in longer than stock lenghts, and it is just as strong as the 630.

According to JT Sprockets (because I did not find the info anywhere else).

Kawasaki KZ1000 J1-J3 USA
1981 to 1983

Front Sprocket: JTF 522.15

Rear Sprocket: JTR 501.41

Recommended Chain: : 630 / 96

So they say the stock 81-83 J Model sprockets are 15/41.

And that's all I can find on the subject, while freely admitting I have no personal knowledge of the correct sprocket sizes :)
