18" Rear Wheel on LTD 1000?

I'm thinking about picking up an LTD 1000 but really prefer an 18" rear wheel....can that be done without any problems on the '77 to '80 models? I wonder how an LTD would look with the 18" wheel....should look like the A model, I would think. I don't think there's much of a frame difference other than the rear peg / exhaust mounts is there? I'm thinking rear caliper and rotor might be smaller on the 16" but not sure. Any other issues to look for? I would be replacing the 16" wheel with an 18" wheel from another KZ...either a stock MKII rear wheel or maybe a '77/'78 A model hub with a custom rim. Thanks

My experience, same rotor and caliper size. Should just slide right in and I agree, 18's are a better setup.

I installed a Mark II rear wheel on my A4 and had to change the rotor. The Mark II rotor is larger and won't allow the stay rod to connect. The stay rod hit the top of the rotor.

My thoughts on the rear rotor came about when I cross referenced the part numbers for my friend. I compared the 1980 B4 LTD vs. the 1979 A3 MKII....different part number although the rotors look identical to me. I have a spare set of MKII wheels including the rear caliper and master cylinder, brake stay...even swingarm and shocks now that I think about it....but worse case I would probably have to put the MKII caliper on with the MKII rear wheel and be fine.

I know the rear sprockets are different too....33 teeth on the B models vs. 35 teeth on the A models.

Cool, didn't know that a MK11 was bigger. Good thing to know!

same thing with the 78 Z1 rear rotor, it was about a 1/4 inch bigger than my LTD rotor, so I had to buy a 78 Z1 caliper, the front Z1 rotors were the same size as the LTD rotors, so no problems there...Pete

I just hate how darn skinny they are. Nothing screams antique like a 2 inch rim lol

Like I said before the MKII in 79 and the A4 in 80 used the exact same rotor. 79-80 KZ1000 A series used the same rotor exactly. Now, putting a decent 18" wheel in place of a dumbass 16" I don't know, but sure worth a try.

What year LTD are you looking at?
I know the '78 LTD uses a different rear caliper than the KZ A2. It is smaller for the LTD. Not sure about rotor diameter for the '78 LTD.
The rear rotor on my '80 LTD is 1/2" smaller in diameter than the '78 KZ A2 rear rotor. That tells me the rear caliper may be(should be) spaced different from the axle center line to the pad location. Hope all that doesn't confuse you too much :silly:
