Stock kz1000 tire size?
12 Aug 2012 03:34 - 12 Aug 2012 04:08
My 78 currently has 100/90/19 on the front and 130/80/18 tires on the rears, what was the stock rear aspect ratio? I'm ordering new rubber and am trying to decide on 130/80/18 or 130/90/18, any recommendations on size? I'm going with Avon roadriders by the way, keep hearing good things about them.

My Kz manual says 4.00-18 4pr for the rear, what does that equal in modern sizing?
Edit: nevermind, I can only get rear roadriders in 130/80/18's. Problem solved.

Thank Patton
After taking a long hard look at the 130/80/18 that's on it, I think I'm going to go with a 120/90/18. It looks too short and has worn a touch flat as well, I think a taller aspect ratio and the narrower 120 will be the ticket. Seems to be the opinion over on the sohc forum on the cb750's as well, I'm game to give it a shot.

120/90 is the best size unless you can get the 4.00-18 which is better yet, but not too many offerings in 4.00-18. There is nothing "equivalent" to a 4.00-18. 110/90 is usually listed as equivalent. RIGHT! not even close, close in width but too short. 120/90 is close in height but too wide. 130/80 is too short and too wide. Those are the basic choices.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Iirc the roadriders are offered in 4.00-18, but I like the idea of 120/90's more. Good compromise of wider but close I think, we shall see.

I run a 120/90-18 Shinko 712 that absolutely sticks like glue. Great tire so far.
The Avon should do you right in 120/90

are these tires with tubes or without tubes? i have a 77 kz1000A and the person i bought it off from put some kind of sealant material on the tubeless tire and rim to make it tubeless. i just ordered the avon am26 120/90/18 for the rear. should i switch back to using a tube?

You absolutely should use a tube with a '77 rim. It's ok to use tires marked "tubeless" but you still must use tubes. Be sure to install a rim band if there is not one already there (it looks like a giant black rubber band). Ed

Just got a 120/90 by 18 Shinko 712.
Measures right at 5 inches wide and 26 and a half in dia. The Conny blitz same size tire have does a gd job (2 of em) for many years and measured out at 4 and a half so I'm really liking the extra half inch width and with the tread pattern It should really hook up on my 650.
So glad I picked this tire its gonna look mean once I get it put on and was a great deal on ebay... 58 to 62 dollars depending on who you like.
