Countershaft Sprocket Alignment

Bike is a 1980 750 LTD H. I'm changing the chain and sprockets and discovered that the chain is running against the inside of the drive sprocket. I don't think this is an adjustment issue as the chain runs in the middle of the rear sprocket and appears to be straight at least to my eye. Adjuster marks are pretty close and the bike runs straight hands free also. I'm planning on shimming the replacement sprocket out about 20-25 thousandths to bring the sprocket into line with the chain. Is this correct? Anyone with better ideas? Thanks for any help,

Personally I dont trust those mass produced marks on chain adjusters,I measure each side with a tape measure from center of pivot bolt to center of axle.
If the chain has lots of miles on it it could also just be worn enough to let it wander side to side from sprocket to sprocket

I use a Profi Cat Laser Alignment Tool. Once you use this you'll love it.

So are you saying that if the alignment is correct that the chain will be centered on the drive sprocket every time? This sounds correct to me except that I'm seeing considerable wear on the inside of the drive sprocket only. It seems to me to be running parallel but offset. Maybe I'm over complicating things but this is the first time I remember seeing this in a considerable number of years. Your way of measuring is better than what I use but my main alignment check so far has been to make sure the driven sprocket has clearance on both sides of the teeth. Think I'll bring out the tape and try your way also.
