Mounting rearset for rear brake
26 Jul 2012 00:52
Hey guys. So I got my rearsets from Dime City Cycles the other day and am now working on having some aluminum brackets made to attach them to the frame.
I would like to attach the brackets to the original footrest mount holes, but on the right side, the rear brake spline is right where I want to have my rearset attached to the bracket.
The place I am getting the brackets made said that since the brake actuating lever on my new rearset is adjustable, I can attach it directly to the master cylinder plunger and therefore bypass the splined pivot and any linkage:
That seems like a great idea, but he also said that since the lever is shorter than original (which reduces the amount of mechanical advantage) that a different master cylinder bore size is likely to be required.
Has anybody ever had this issue with their rearsets? And if so, what did you do about changing your master cylinder bore size?
Any input would be much appreciated.
Thanks guys.

The left side is much easier. I have the linkage to reach the clutch spline. The rearset would be a perfect fit right between those 2 original footrest mount holes:

Have you tried switching sides with the levers to see if its easier to align with rod on mc?

What if you mounted your mastercylinder up under the sidecover with rod coming down inside of frame like most late 70s bikes were and modify it to fit your rear sets?

I think you might be ok with the bore size. If it has a 0 14 on the side of the master, then it's already the smaller size.
Notice the spline arm is longer than the rear-set lever arm. That means you will regain some of the force.
Just make sure the return spring allows the master to return fully or it may bind up while riding due to heat.

I made a bracket to attach the rearsets to the stock mounts like your thinking of doing. Here are some pics.

Nice, looks great. You could probably mass produce them and sell 'em.
