spedometer housing

what is the best lubricant for the housing, & the tach,& speedo cables ?..& should new cables be lubed.Pete

Speedo gear housing should be greased and new tach and speedo cables should be given a light coating of grease. I use Mobil-1 synthetic wheel bearing grease. Clutch and throttle cables should be lubed with motor oil. Ed

PJ1 makes a great cable lube and they have a kit with the mechanism that injects the lube into the cable sheath.
Bel Ray waterproof grease has worked for me for greasing things.

New cables come lubed but you should lube them anyway. Peace of mind.

O.K. I loaded up the speedo gearbox with Mobil 1 synthetic grease, ...now I havent replaced the cables yet, & could"nt find PJ1 at any of the local motor cycle/auto parts stores,....but I looked at my stash of goodies I borrowed from work before I retired, & I have a can of CPI correl lube 800 , when I googled it...it sounds like its more than good enough,...has any one ever used this lube ???...Pete

I haven't used the CPI product, so I can't say. I use the Mobil-1 synthetic grease on the inner tach and speedo cables. I just slip out the inner cables, wipe them clean, put a glob of the grease on a rag, and using that put a thin coat of grease on the inner cable. No need to load up the inside of the outer cable with grease as the service manual only calls for a thin coat. Ed

Ed I bought the mobil 1, but I have the correl lube, & its in a spray can with tube, & the price was right, if you got time google it , & let me know what you think,..I think it woughd be a little easyer to just spray into the cable, since I already have it...Thanks ...Pete

I looked it up (below). I would think it should work fine. I would slip out the inner cable first and wipe the old gunk off (they get a bit nasty after a while) and then apply the lube to the inner cable before putting it back. My concern about spraying it into the cable is that it might build up near the end of the cable you're spraying it into before making it all the way through the cable. Also, keep in mind it only takes a light coating rather than fully loading the cable. Ed

Ed,they are both new cables that I havent instaled yet, so I figure I"ll pull the inner cables out , & wipe them off, then spray the inner cable down,then spray the inside of the outer cable, & let any lube run out before installing the inner cable, then install them on the bike...Pete

Sounds like a good approach. When you pull the inner cables be careful to see if there are some tiny washers on one of the ends. I think some have them and some don't, but if they do and you drop one they can be hard to find on an asphalt driveway (guess how I know? :laugh: ) Ed

10-4 Ed, I already see a tiny rubber washer on one end of the speedo cable, while its still in the plastick bag,...I"ll keep my eyes open...Thanks..Pete
