Wheel bearing question?
19 Jun 2012 00:10
Ok so my first post here. I have lurked for a while... I'm building a 78kz750 cafe and converting the forks to a 2004 GSXR750 front end. My question is how can I run the stock KZ spoke rim on the GSXR forks? The axel is almost exactly the same length but the GSXR axle is thick as hell. Any way to run the KZ front axle with the GSXR forks? Or suggestions on what wheel bearings to swap to run the larger axle...
And before I get flamed. I have used the "search" function several times. Couldnt find anything....
Thanks

Check with your local bearing supplier on what new bearing to use, take along the new axle for measurments. Also try
www.goallballs.com
(a bearing supplier for motorcycles).

The brake disc/discs will have to be addressed too.
Are you going with a GSXR750 brake/brakes ?
If so , a Kz disc probably wouldn't work.
You'll also need spacers.

Ok so allballsracing doesnt carry the bearing Ill need. Looks like its going to be
25mm ID
40mm OD
Width of 15mm
Any one know where I can get one made? I would like to run the GSXR calipers also. I figure I would need to space out the KZ rotors if not just buy new ones.
Is there anyway I can run the KZ axle in the GSXR forks? Maybe have a machine shop fab up an axle that fits the ends on the GSXR fork, but still manage to keep the KZ diameter?
UGH why cant everything just be plug and play lol...
Thanks for the help Mfolks and Blue

Maybe you should just have a rim laced to fit the stock axle. Do some research and see if there was a spoked wheel from a cruiser of the same year maybe you will get lucky. Then maybe you wont have to fuss with the brakes either.

25mm ID
40mm OD
Think about that for a moment, 40mm - 25mm / 2 = 7.5mm
That 7.5mm includes the thickness of the outer race, the inner race, and the diameter of the balls between the two races. That's ~5/16" for the whole package. Really want something like that supporting your front wheel?
Take the forks, wheel, brake disks, axle, etc, to a machine shop and tell them what you want to do. They will probably tell you they can do that for you, while looking at you like you're crazy.
Be a whole lot cheaper to use the Suzuki wheel and brakes, plus you can run radial tires.

Steel: 40 - 25 = 15 Why did you divide by 2? Not saying your wrong just wondering...
I have been looking around the area for some machine shops. Probably going to have an axle that fits the fork ends but that also lets me run the stock wheel bearing.
I really like the spoke wheels so dont want to run the GSXR wheel. I have tried to research a few other wheels, but can find out how to tell what wheel bearings they need.
I guess machine shop is whats going to have to happen. Any thoughts as to what it "should" or might cost?

Can you machine the hub for a larger OD bearing? I agree with steell it might be difficult finding one given the available space. You might find a cylindrical roller bearing to fit, but IDK about heat buildup.

7.5mm top, 7.5mm bottom, = 15mm total.
7.5mm plus 25mm plus 7.5mm.
Am I explaining ok? Or confusing the issue even more?
If it's just a spoke wheel you want on front, look at some of the newer bikes with spoke wheels.

Ok so I think I got this figured out. It hoes a little something like this...
Sense the KZ axle is a three part axle. (the two ends that screw on and the axle its self)
Im having a shop machine new ends that are the same diameter as the bottom of the GSXR fork clamps but have the same thread as the KZ axle. This way I can just thread new ends on the KZ axle that fit the GSXR forks ends.
Does any body see anything wrong with this? I mean this way it's still the stock axle so no integrity issues there and no need for custom bearings that might fail on me.
I'll have pictures up tomorrow when they're done...
All input is welcome, I appreciate the help so far!!

Sounds cool to me.
Now you have to deal with the brake disks
