Help ID Brake Part '76 KZ900

10 May 2012 09:13

I am in the process of putting my '76 KZ900 back together. I came across this spring in my master cylinder and front caliper hardware. I was good about taking pics of everything, but of course I don't have a pic for it and I haven't spotted it in the parts manual.

Any expert help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not from the M/C. Maybe a carb air screw mixture spring?

It looks to be the spring in the master cylinder that pushes the piston back

Kawickrice, wouldn't the M/C spring be longer than 10mm. And it would be tapered to one end kinda cone like without the point. I just rebuilt my M/C about a month ago. Don't remember a spring that looks like that. Here's what mine looked like. Master Cylinder Kit

On the "older round style" (i.e. 1/2" bore, single front caliper), the spring is at least an inch and a half long. I JUST rebuilt mind last week, otherwise I'd measure it for you.

That spring doesn't look to be from the caliper either, as I rebuilt mine last week too.

It is not the spring that goes on the plunger in the master cylinder. My initial thought when I saw it in the bag was that it went in the front brake handle assembly. I just can't remember and it doesn't show in any of the pics I took during disassembly.

I will go out on a limb here and say it is the spring that goes into the kick start lever where it has a detent built into the boss for a little ball and that spring. Your kick start lever should click when it turns out for use and that spring and ball holds it fully open and fully closed. All of this is exposed when you pull the cir-clip and washer off to chrome the parts or do a cleanup.
Curious to know!

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configuration

Kawboy74, I think you are right. Thanks!

I did take it apart to have the lever rechromed and haven't reassembled it yet. And I had the washer and circlip zinc plated. Thanks everyone for their help. I would have spent a while trying to figure that one out.
