how do i make cables fit shorter bars?
04 Apr 2012 09:28
Hi, i am trying to fit a straight drag bar on my stock 82 kz750 but the cables are to long for shorter bars. My bike currently has the 8" "ape hanger" style bars. (Im a noob) anyway how do i shorten the clutch and throttle cables? I already got a new brake lever and resivor off a susuki so its straight and not angled like the old one.
Help please
Cheers

If you got apes then you do not have stock cables on it. Get stock cables and they should be shorter. Also if you have a LTD get standard cables and they will be shorter. Other than that you can have cables made but runs into some $$.
Take it from me cuz I found

Just contact Z1Enterprises and tell them what you got and what you want to do. Chances are very good they know exactly what you need and can sell the right stuff to you.

^ yep, what the boys said. Barnett also makes cables in case you were not aware. The Motion Pro would be my 1st pick though... they have a nylon insert in the jacket that reduces friction and work really well. The custom MP ones are really trick I like the steel braided jacket type with a clear jacket but they are pricey compared to the stock ones.

I took my old one off and went to my local Kawasaki dealer. They looked at everything they had in stock and found one that looked similar that was shorter. You just have to make sure the bend on the carb side of the cable is the same so it works the same on the carbs. I have a 1980 kz750LTD and the cable I bought off of them was (they told me) stock for a KZ550. It was cool because I could see it in person and compare to make sure I thought it would work and no waiting by the mailbox every day.

I switched my LTD from "buckhorn" to "daytona bars". I looked at the stock cable lengths and ordered cables for a "D" model. fit perfect.
Some sites tell you the lengths of the cables, or you can spend quality time with the parts diagrams.
