well u came to the right place there are lots of great guys here to help u out. the acewell is a popular fix. if u go that rout, i would just cut out an aluminum plate by hand . just bolt the plate to the tree and mount the acewell. done.
how fancy u get is up to u. but if time and cash are limited, i would keep it simple and get it done. Worry about fancy stuff when the time comes.

when you say aluminium plate.... are you referring to aluminium sheet metal? and where is a descent source for aluminium, All I have ever searched for is stainless, and would sheet metal be stiff enough? I would imagine the gauges would vibrate enough to be difficult to read.
