tube rims to tubeless? same size front a rear rims
11 Mar 2012 21:26
soo looking around for rubber..
i realize i have tubes in my tires.. i have a manual tire changer and would like to use tubeless tires..
do i to to get a different rim? or do i just need a differnt tire?
also.. is there a set of identical rim sized rims that i can put onto the bike?

You can use tubes in tubeless tires - you don't need to change the rims. However, you must still use tubes in those rims, so if you are trying to get away from using tubes, yes you will need rims designed to be run tubeless. They are different. Ed

Most OEM spoke wheels require a tube. I'd suggest giving Buchnanan's a try:

Due to the additional risk involved when running a ridge-less rim without a tube, the safer practice is to always use a tube on a ridge-less rim, regardless of the tire.
The main danger when running a ridge-less rim without a tube is when hitting a pothole or bump while leaned over at speed, when the tire bead may escape a ridge-less rim, causing instant deflation.
Those to whom the above scenario will never happen may be willing to assume the additional risk of running a ridge-less rim without a tube.
For those willing to assume the risk, or unwilling to heed the warning, or who just don't give an R.A., and are bound and determined to run tubeless on a ridge-less wire spoke rim, here's how to seal the spoke wheel rim:
Click > www.gadgetjq.com/tww.htm
And after all that, it doesn't resolve the risk involved with running a tubeless tire on a non-tubeless style rim.
Good Fortune!

Yes. Rim design is the critical difference as to advisability of running without a tube, regardless of whether the wheel is wire spoke or a mag style wheel.
For example, the oem genuine Morris Mags on KZ900 LTD, and the Lester mags on Z1, and oem wire spoke wheels on GB500, are all designed for being used with tubes.
BMW has at least one model with oem wire spoke wheels designed to run tubeless.
There's also an aftermarket wire spoke tubeless wheel that has the spokes fitted outside the tire bead.
Good Fortune!

Wow, this really is not rocket science; it’s really very simple. Whether they have spokes, are alloy, or made of wood - with tube type rims you need to use tubes. With rims specifically designed to run without tubes you can run without tubes. If you have a death wish you can run on tube type rims without tubes. You will no doubt get away with it for a while, but one day if you’re running down the highway at 80 mph with traffic around and behind you and your tire goes flat…. Well, you get the idea. It’s up to you if you want to take such a risk because you don’t want to spend the cost equivalent of a few gallons of gas on tubes. Personally, I don’t understand the fear of using tubes when they are needed. Wear a helmet. Ed
