Can anyone here tell me about relocating the top shock mount on a '75 Z1 so I can get the shocks angled better, like a ZRX?????

Thanks Chris

The two methods I have seen discussed are:

1. The existing shock mount needs to removed from the frame and cleaned up on a lathe, a new location cut/prepared, welded into the frame.
2. A new shock mount is built on a lathe, a new location is cut/prepared, welded into the frame.

But doesn't a new "box section" have to be built up to accept the new mount? I wouldn't think that you could just remove the old mounting "stud and weld it to the frame tube. I'm a little lost here. I've been driving myself nuts looking for detailed pics of a relocated mount and I can't find any that give me a detailed look at what needs to be done. I already have a ZRX 1200 s/arm and either a 5 1/2 or a 6 (I have both) rear wheel. I know I'm going to have to cut off the old pass.peg/muffler mounts, and now I see that some folks have cut/flattened/ re-welded the frame tubes to clear the chain. Question is, will the chain clear with the 5 1/2.......the 6.......or not at all?
Thanks for any help you can give me!

It really depends on what front offset you end using. If you can get away with a 1/2" offset from sprocket I doubt you'll need to flatten the inside of the frame. However, if you run a 5/8" front sprocket the chain will most like rub the frame slightly requiring you to mod the frame some.

If you're already set on moving the top shock mounts then you might as well go ahead and flatten the frame while your at it for the peace of mind it'll give.

Here's a link to a guy moving the shock mounts on a MKII. Maybe this will help.

That's basically what I've seen also. You could make a boxed section as well, guess it's up to whether you feel it is necessary or not.

here is a close up of one installed.all these pics are from sanctuary in japan.

they go all the way through the frame tube and get welded on both sides, thus bridging the tube and maiking it stronger than it was to start with.if you just welded the stud to the tube and did not extend it all the way through you would tear it off the frame in short order.
here is another pic.

here are the studs themselves

here is the jig they use to properly locate the studs on the frame.

i hope this helps.

to run any wider than a 140 you are going to have to address the chain line.

ramtough runs a 190 rear with a 1/2 inch offset countershaft sprocket in a zx636 swingarm.

they fit,but you gotta make em fit.

I was just over at sanctuary checking out the Z1-R's, is it just me or is the silver mist blue bike missing the cam plugs on the head? I zoomed in pretty close and I don't see them, just looks empty.

sorry for the thread jack.

which sanctuary site were you at?
the one silvermist blue z1r pic i have from them ihas some copper/bronze kinda colored aluminum end caps.
if you make it big enough you can see the machined lip around them.

i have a zrx12 arm on my kz. i used a 5 1/2" zrx rim. i used a 5/8" offset sprocket and flattened the inner side of the frame for chain clearance. u also need to remove the lower inner footpeg mount boss for chain clearance. i had to mill the inside of the rear wheel hub to bring the sprocket closer to the tire. this caused me to use a 170 tire.
i also moved the upper shock mount to copy the zrx geometry. u can do the mount as mentioned above, or weld in a solid bar that has been drilled right through. then u can just run a bolt right through the shock and frame.i tried that the last time and it is working fine.

My build is here.
