Rebuilding Brakes?
27 Feb 2012 23:32 - 06 Mar 2012 02:47
I just bought new brake rebuild kits for my front brakes. Is there anything I should know about installation of new seals? Fairly easy and straight forward? Anything to look for?
Thanks

Use an air compressor to blow the piston out. Be careful, you can VERY EASILY mash up your fingers. Stick an old rag inside the caliper, where the rotor and pads would be so the piston blowing out does not get dinged up by hitting the caliper casting [and hopefully not your fingers].
Coat the seals with brake fluid before installing them.

Thanks! That's how I figured I'd have to get the piston out.

Do these single piston brakes work very good? I have been used to 4 pots and 6 pots.

Well the only comparison I have is riding a BMW S1000RR in which I grabbed the front brake with all 4 fingers, out of habit, and was nearly thrown straight out of the saddle in front of the bike. They do not compare to Brembo monobloc calipers in the slightest.

I would imagine not. lol
I can't remember the good ol' days of riding bikes with single pot brakes.I guess they seemed alright at the time.

Well got the brakes apart and they were a little dirty. There is a little pitting on one of the pistons but not bad. Doe's it matter if the inside bores are a little rough?

When rebuilding the brakes do you have to put a little grease on the bolts (2) that connect the caliper to the mount and let the brake slide back and fourth? Also what is part (13) (plug) used for? I don't remember seeing these on dis-assembly of the brakes.
