yessir,that is the method used by road racers for years.
there is just enough of a gap for the safety wire to live in between the links and the sprocket.
give it a look,you will see what i mean.

I do believe I'll do this on mine.

If you aren't going to use it often, Harbor Freight sells a chain breaker for $9.99. I just got one for my 530 and it worked fine.
