KZ900 Lowering
26 May 2006 17:01
Hi. I have a '76 KZ900, and I'm looking to lower it a bit - preferably just the rear end. Between the two options - lowering blocks or shorter shocks - which is the better option? Just wondering how best to go about this. Thanks!

I dont know about the lowering kit, but I have a pair of s&w air shocks which came off a chopper 76kz 900. Seemed to make the bike lower in the rear. Chrome is nice on them and they hold air well. A I am willing to sell or trade for any sort of aftermarket shocks.

when hunting for these replacement shorter shocks what should one consider; clearance between tire and fender, spring rate, etc. I have no idea where to start but I have heard that a slight lowering will improve stability on these bikes. Please help.

Lowering the bike will make it feel easier and safer to lean in the corners. Lowering the front helps make cornering better and feel more comfortable.
Just remember to not go too low, as a part that can connect with the ground in a hard lean/turn, results in a scary diving tendency which the inexperienced usually end up crashing/bailing.
But I'd say that most arent leaning that far riding casually anyways
Best of luck.

I have been looking for a way to lower my 1976 900 LTD. Do you have a part # or description of the item, that you found in the JC Whitney catalog? Also, if you come up with a lowered shock, I would appreciate that information also.
Thanks,
Tim

Here's the simple cheap way!
Cut the outer bracket off of the swing arm, were the shock bolts up. You can buy swingarms to replace for original for $25 on ebay.
Once you cut that bracket off, drill a 3/8 hole right below in the flat spot of the swingarm. Use good quality 3/8 bolts and washers, nuts. Instant lowered. Then yuou have to bend out, or cut an inch out of the kickstand.
I did this at least a dozen times. Oh ya, when the tail light goes out you have to move the wires! Cause the tire rubbed them when you went two up on the bike and it bottomed out!
Cheap! Fix it with a new swingarm from ebay if you don't like it.
