Rear 18" Mag wheel question

31 Jan 2012 18:45
#501137
I remember reading somewhere that there were two widths for a rear 18" mag. The "standard" 2.15" and something wider, maybe a 2.5"? Can anyone shed any more light on this? Did the wider rim come on a cop bike?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

I am using a mid 80's police 18x2.5 in rear wheel on my project 1980 KZ1000 B4. The axle is the same 20mm OD. I will have to make a mount for a modern caliper and some spacers. I will post photos when I am done.

Ok, thanks! Brian has a Z1R 2.15" wheel that I'm interested in. I'm starting a build soon and need a wider 18" rear mag so I can put on a wider, sticker tire. (Ditching the stock swingarm, of course)

Jon, it'd be great to see a picture of your cop wheel. Does it look different than the normal Enkei's?

This is a photo of the police wheel, ZRX shocks, and Zephyr arm on my 1980 B4.

I have also included a photo of the clutch cover and ignition housing, and a photo of the YZF600r forks I am using with R1 monoblock calipers and a stock front wheel, and a photo of the YZF600r taillight mod, and a photo of the police tank, billit fuel cap, bar mounts, and triple clamp I am using.

Looks good! Are you using a cop front wheel also? What size is your rear tire?

The front wheel is a stock 2.15/19 1980 KZ1000 B4 with a 100/90-19 tire, the rear tire is a 130/80-18, both are the new Conti "GO".

Do you know what year of cop rear wheel you had? Those are the same tire sizes as I have on my bike with 2.15" rear and stock swingarm.

The wheel is from an 84, but they used the same part from 1981 till 1993. I used the Conti webite when I orderd those tires. I always try to use the recomended tire size, and a 2.5in wide rim is the smallest recomended for the 130/80-18 tire. Handeling is more important to me then looks.

I have the 2.5 rim and am going for a 120 tire as it falls in the middle of the recommended range.

I used an '86 police rear wheel on my GPz550. In the pics it has 120/80-18 Avon AM26. You could probably use a 130, but the 120 was already 10mm wider than the stock 550 tire. The rim is also approx 10mm wider than the stock 2.15. The wheels seem identical, except for the added width of the outer rim. The cush drive and rotor from the 550 bolt-up.

The KZ1000 J model and R models probably had the 2.50 also
