Gearing Change with rim size change Questions
31 Jan 2012 01:56
Hey guys,
Have 81 kz 750-4 stock gearing(13/32-630 chain). I'm going to to change the the sprocket and chain to a 530(16/39) and swapping the stock 16in rim with a 18in rim; and I am just wonder how changing the rim size will affect my gearing for stock? Any info would be great.
Thanks,
Dylon
I am planning to put a 530 chain on with a 17 tooth front and 44 tooth rear sprocket.

depending on the height of the tire. there is a calculation for tire sizt that will give you the overall hetgth with your 16 inch rim then useth the calculation for the 18 inch rim to see which tire is actually 2" shorter I cant remember the exact calculation

here is the calculation
Tire size lets say 130
times the aspect ratio
lats say .90
130X.90= 117
devided by 25.4 (metric conversion)
=4.6 inches
plus your current rim 16
=20.6 is you current tire height
130X.90/25.4+16=20.6
130X.55=71.5/25.4=2.81+18=20.8
you can use this with any width as long as they make a tire to keep you heght the same

The stock gearing on the 1981 KZ750 E2 (which came standard with an 18" rear wheel running a 400H-18 tire) is 13/33. That's not much different than what you have today; probably because of the rear tire diameters being pretty close. Ed

Use this website:
www.gearingcommander.com/
You can plug in different tire sizes, and gear combinations. It will tell you more information than you want to know about rpms per given speed, chain wear calculations, etc.
