'81 KZ550A horn location?
02 Dec 2011 13:11
Hello. This is my first official question about my first ever bike, and it's a big one...
does anyone know where the horn bolts to on a '81 KZ550A?
Thanks.

There might be a pic in the manual showing oem horn attachment.

Thanks Patton, I've been through the manual a few times and can't seem to find it. I'll just wing it with zip ties for now until I can figure it out.

Here's the diagram shown at kawasaki.com.
But which doesn't show the horn fitment onto the the bike.
Inasmuch as the diagram shows only the two bolts and no nuts, would guess the bolts thread into threaded tabs on the frame, which match the horn bracket hole spacing.
If the frame has been modified, perhaps the tabs were removed.
Just guessing.

Cool, thanks. I just finally found a head-on photo of a KZ550 where you can see the horn peeking out through the space in the frame between the forks above the fender below the Kawasaki emblem, so I'll have to look closer when I get home... I'm sure I must've just overlooked the threaded tabs.

In case anyone's interested, the horn mounts to a tab right in front of the vacuum switch. Somewhat tight quarters... just have to push the vacuum switch out of the way a little to get the bolts started. A pic of the tab without the horn is attached:

By the way, if you are so inclined, you can eliminate the vacuum switch with no affects on the running.
If the vacuum switch is failing, you will get backfires in the exhaust when you close the throttle.
If it's working, and it's not in your way, or if you need it for emissions testing, then there's no reason to remove it.

Forgot to mention... if you remove it, you have to cap off every hose and vacuum line that went to it.
