Substitute for locking tabs?
01 Nov 2011 09:16
Has anyone tried to replace the locking tabs for their brake bolts etc for something more easily worked? I dont really want to take a chance with my brakes but there's bound to be a better modern substitute!

Yes, red would REALLY LOCK THEM. to the point it might pull them aluminum threads out with the bolt the next time you dis-assemble. Blue is safer. Just my opinion

Ah right, ok, just asking cos the disc bolts that hold my 07 ZX6R discs to the rim are done with the red stuff, then again thats modern technology, maybe the old bike's threads are more brittle.

I'll use a locking agent for the front discs & nylon locking nuts for the rear.

Just because it's color happens to be red on some newer motorcycles on thread lock does not mean it's Loctite red. Blue is plenty strong enough.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Thats kinda how i understood it, by 'removing it' do they mean the locking compound or bolt? I know kawasaki supply their std brake disc securing bolts already coated in the red stuff, they're tight but they can be got out without heat being applied to them.
However, thats why i was asking, with the heat that brakes generate woulf the red be the better choice or is the Blue ok? The last time i used the blue Loctite stuff it seemed pretty dam easy to remove the bolts.
And then there's the green stuff, is it like a bearing seal? I've used some Loctite green stuff before & i seriously don't know how it can be removed!

Some of the green Loctite's are the "Wicking Type" that's dripped onto fasteners after they are tighted up. It penetrates the threads and then sets up.
The bearing retainer types are high strength, and probably need heat to be removed.
