82 GPz1100 seat mounting
30 Oct 2011 23:24
Well....I recently purchased an 82GPz1100. It's pretty much complete but the previous owner apparently wasn't very mechanically inclined and since it is missing the grab rail(I'm assuming this is what is supposed to lock the seat in place) he just attached it with a clevis pin and a cotter pin. Anyone willing to send a couple of pixs to show how the rear of the seat is SUPPOSED to mount ??Thanks to anyone who is willing !
Rick
Ps-tried a search but couldn't come up with anything. Just waiting for my manual to come in too !

The grab rail does not secure the seat. On the front of the seat on the front edge, are two metal tabs that fit on mating places on the top of the frame. The rear of the seat fits into a locking device secured with the key that fits the ignition, and helmet lock.
When the key fits the lock for the seat, two small metal tabs(one on each side of the seat)are pushed foward, letting the seat be lifted away toward the rear of the bike. This takes about 3-5 seconds to remove the seat.

The website
www.classickawasaki.se
(Swedish website) has a PDF on the parts breakdown of the 1981 and 1982 GPz's. The seat listing is toward the end of the diagrams.

Thanks,Mfolks ! Now I grasp how it works. I did understand how the front of the seat locks in as that was still correct-it was the back mounting I didn't understand. It appears the seat lock is missing and so is the bar/rod with the side plates that mounts to the bottom of the seat pan . At least now I can begin to contemplate what I need to fabricate if I can't locate one. Thanks again !

OK-back again now that the holidays are over with more questions. I found a bracket(thank you e-bay) that was supposedly from a KZ1000J and seems to fit the bracket on the seat , however when I put the seat onto the frame the bracket does not seem long enough to latch onto any mounts ? Just curious to see if I'm missing something here. I realize I don't have the seat lock-still searching for one of those. So,again, anyone having or willing to take a picture of how this is supposed to fit together -many thanks to you !!!

Take the bracket on the seat and turn it around...mine is mounted opposite of yours. Rephrased, the two ends of the latch on the bottom of the seat have ends that are of different length...the one with the long end goes on the side you have pictured. As the long end goes into the box-like area of the frame, it'll catch on the lip of the rear edge. In order to do this you have to really press down on the seat, which, in turn, forces the seat forward onto the anterior catches. The lock keeps the latches in place. As for the grab bar...they are highly desired by both GPz owners and ELR owners...this makes them pricey on eBay, whenever they do appear.

Thanks Mcdroid ! Never considered an about face ! I have noticed the slim pickings(very rare!) on the grab bar,but I was told by someone that it isn't needed for mounting the seat? I was considering making my own abbreviated version to go on each side(not up and around the back of the seat)for lofting it onto the center-stand.

Yeah, the grab bar has nothing to do with the seat...but it is very helpful in wrestling the beast onto the centerstand.
