96' 1000 Front wheel conversion
24 Sep 2011 21:54
Hey all,
Relatively new to these forums and looks great so far!
I'm not new to working on vintage motorcycles, but I am new to Kawasaki. I recentely bought a 1996 KZ1000 (as you know police). I'm chopping it up into a bobber for the first time. Going through some regular maintenance first of course.
The front wheel has a little damage on the very outside of the lip on only one side. The lip is basically "swollen" outward about 1/2inch. So I'm in the market for a new front wheel. I understand the KZ has a long history, but I'm not to sure about the accuracy of eash model from year to year.
Basically, are the rims the same from 1978 untill 96? If not, what other years correspond with mine?
V/R
Kevin

I suspect (but do not know for sure)that the KZ1000P had the same front wheel from beginning to end. There were, however, a bunch of KZ1000 civilian models that used a variety of front wheel, fork and brake combinations. Used wheels for the P should be fairly common, though you will want to insure that you don't buy another damaged one. They often lived a pretty hard life.
P.S. I just checked the parts diagram on kawasaki.com, and something in the front wheel assembly changed in 1994, so any P wheel from 1994 - 2005 should work on your bike with no problem.

Thanks Texas,
Would the spoke wheels be way out of the ball park for mine? Would love to go spoked but not sure what is needed to convert.
