brake upgrade
12 Sep 2011 11:24
so guys, i just upgraded the brakes on my honda vtr and i have the spare set just laying around, could i swap out the master cylinder from my kz to the VTR1000 one? my MC on the 650 is pretty crappy... its leaking a bit, i did just replace the cracked cap and its better but i just was wondering. have people have swapped out to the newer style MC?
thanks a bunch

i have read that, thats the reason i decided to go with my rc51 brakes on the VTR, what i dont get is, will the VTR MC effect my kz in a negative way? the mc i have for the z right now is pretty leaky and i thought since i have the vtr's layin around i would give it a try, and it has an adjustable lever which i like

laymans terms.
too big a master cylinder may not apply enough force to stop you.
too small may apply too much force and cause you to lock up the wheel.
in other words if you don't know how to figure out if your master cylinder and calipers are matched to each other, you should keep the master cylinder and calipers matched as they came off the bikes.
just throwing the m/c off one bike on another "because it don't leak"could cause you a problem.
brake problems can be fatal.

so what is the "correct" ratio? the stock one for the kz? so as close to 6.67 as possible? it seems like the matchup for the vtr's is 8.85.
i am just trying to learn how to make good decisions and i do know brakes are something not to be taken lightly thats why i am asking as much as possible before i do anything in hopes that someone had tried using a modern MC on their bike.

You do realize that you have that backwards?
Smaller master cylinder = more force
Larger master cylinder = less force
At the caliper.
5/8" = ` 15.5mm
What I want are F4i calipers with the VTR master cylinder, been looking on eBay.
I use a 15mm ZX11/GPZ1100/ZG1000 master cylinder with 83 GPz750 calipers on my 750 twin and love the braking power.
14mm would make your brakes touchy, as in one finger lock up. 15mm would be much better.
I have an extra 15mm master cylinder, want to swap?
