I have a KZ650C with a 4 into one header running along the lower left side of the frame. I need to jack the bike to change the tires. I am looking to buy a jack for this purpose but don't know if that header pipe can stay in place or must be removed (oh, I hope not) in order to jack the bike and can anyone recommend a jack for this? Thanks!

I assume the centerstand has been removed because when up it hits the pipe, but can you temporarily install it and use it to hold the bike? Ed

If I get your meaning...the centerstand is installed and lifts the rear tire off the ground, but the front tire is another story. That's why I'm thinking I need to jack up the whole bike.

If you can't do what Ed said then you might try making up a wooden fixture to use with a std. belly lift or if you buy/make your own full size lift then you can use straps and a bottle jack with some sort of wooden fixture or just some plain ol'2x4's if you can find a suitable place to put them under the engine/frame. I don't recommend just using a bottle jack directly against the bottom of the engine/trans, bad things could happen, very bad.

Just be sure your fixture makes contact with as much engine/frame as you can, it will be more stable and less likely to damage anything.

My 1000 doesn't have a center on it but I can install it like Ed said and it works best.

Naw you can use something to weight the rear down and the front will come up, might have to remove the fender though. Just be sure your rear "weight" can't be dislodged while working on the bike.

Or you can get this one from Harbor Freight for under a hundred.

L, if youre' doing the tires one at a time, simply put the bike on its' sidestand. then simpy use a jack under the rh frame rail (roughly points cover for front, & rider peg for rear.) viola 3 point stance either end...G

Sonce you can still use the centerstand the rear wheel is all set to be pulled. When that's done and mounted back on you may want to lift the front the way I do. I just put a bottle jack under the front of the oil pan (using a small block of wood between the jack and pan to protect the pan) and gently jack it up until the front wheel clears the ground. I've done it that way for 34+ years with no problems. Here's a pic of the type of jack I mean. They (like me) are cheap.

+1

In the block of wood, may drill a shallow hole on both sides, one to fit over tip of the jack stand, and the other side to fit over the oil filter bolt or drain plug (whichever jack point is most accommodating). Thereby holds the block in position and maintains orientation of the bike and jack. Bike can't slide off the block. Block can't slide off the jack. And neither bike nor jack slips sideways.

Of course, the jack stand is not used alone to lift the entire bike [Duh]. It simply lifts the bike's front end where the bike is already being otherwise held in a stable upright position.

Good Fortune! :)
