Fork Cap Stuck
11 Aug 2011 20:28
Any ideas on how to get a fork cap out. One of my caps won't come out. I don't have a vice to put it in. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you have it off of the bike, just put the tube back into the triple tree and re-tighten, then try breaking the cap plug free. I always break mine free while still on the bike.
If that was already tried and didn't work then without a vise that's going to be a challenge. I took a strap wrench to make a regular vise a "soft jaw" once to get them out of a set that was already off the bike. Still a pain in the butt to go that route but it worked.

Loosen the upper clamp, not the lower clamp. Pressure on the upper clamp locks the cap in.

Oops, good call Kidkawie, I forgot to mention that I slide them up due to that and so as not to chance slipping and whacking the speedo/tach.

Thanks guys, I'm a tard, never thought about putting it back in the triple tree.
Not that it matters anyhow, I could always put the new oil in after I get the forks back on the bike anyway. Just figured I would try to get them off with forks out.

You're not kidding! The first time I changed fork oil I thought those caps were welded in. Once I figured out to loosen the top clamp I wrote it in my manual so I never make that mistake again. Ed

On some bikes, a too tight bottom clamp will affect the mid stroke of the fork, producing a tight spot.
