So I'm feeling like a major novice now. I simply cannot loosen the nut on the front socket of an '82 kz750e. I have liberally soaked it with pb blaster, heated it 3 or 4 times with a torch, and applied in excess of 200 ft-lb of torque with no results... I blocked the rear wheel with a 2x2 scrap, and I have no impact driver available right now. Any hints? I considered cold-chiseling the nut off and replacing it, but I'm not sure of Tue thread type, so im unsure how easy it would be to replace off-the-shelf.

If you don't have access to an air compressor you may want to borrow or rent an electric impact wrench. Chiseling not good! Ed

Using an old piece of chain is another possible option for holding the sprocket in position.

Good Fortune! :)

Good advice here. The impact will make all the difference. I can literally pop the counter sprocket nut loose with my impact gun and only my hand holding the sprocket with the bike in neutral.
