Can I go up a size in my rear tire?
27 Jun 2011 15:58
Hey Ya'll. I just purchased a 1982 LTD550. I currently have 130/90 for my rear tire size and it needs to be replaced. My friend has a brand new 140/90. Can I put a size larger on this bike?

Not sure, a 140 is a pretty fat tire. What is the stock tire size on the bike?

I'd like to know too as I need a new rear tire aswell. Looks like as is it is pretty close to the chain guard with a 130, but as long as the 140 will mount on the wheel, I'm not worried about clearance because the guard is comin off.

If you mount a 140 on a rim designed for a 120, it will probably wear the center strip of the tire pretty fast since the narrow rim warps the profile of the tire some. Mine runs a 4.00-18 and I ran a 4.75-18 once and it wore the center faster than normal.

On Z1, one rear tire size larger (up to 120 from 110) worked well and looked good.
A 130 bulges over the rim like a fat guy's belly wearing too tight pants.
Good Fortune!

The 140 is much too large for your rim
It will create bad handling characteristics, wear out faster and actually have less rubber on the road
Use the size recommended for your bike

I guess I should have read the OP more closely. I have a KZ750LTD not 550 like the OP. Totally missed that part LOL
