Best way to clean a chain. was created by badrhino
Hello,

Am getting my bike ready for this summer finally and need to get the chain (DID 630 K) cleaned up a bit. Chain is in good shape but has a little surface rust in spots. I have had it soaking in chain lube an WD40 and have also taken a wire brush to it. Now how can I get all of the gunk and excess oil of of it?

Thanks DoublDub.....any other suggestion on how to keep the chain in tip top shape? It is just a normal heavyduty roller chain.

I used to be a proponent of standard HD Molly based chain lubes. I found in the years that I used them the chain rusted tight with the lube on it. Last year I switched to a "Chain Wax" and the difference is astonishing. When I used to adjust my chain every 250 Mi or so with Molly based lube, last year I only had to do it about every 1500 Mi or so.

On the subject, what is the best way to clean and keep a o-ring chain lubed up?

Old people would clean a Chain in a Kerosene Bath, and let it drip dry back into the Cleaning Tub. Than they would wipe it down, and Soak the Chain in Motor Oil and let it Hang Over the Soaking Tub until it mostly stopped Dripping. Than wipe the excess off with a Shop Cloth, and re-install.

Soak a shop rag in mineral spirits and spin the wheel with it wrapped around the chain. For lubing: there is nothing better than the Dupont Teflon multi use spray lube in the big blue can at Lowes ($5) It sprays on with a thin carrier that penetrates into the links and then the carrier evaporates leaving the lube on with a waxy surface sheen. It is clear and does not spin off and make a mess all over your bike.

There is a picture of the can in Doubledub's post above:

This is what the stuff looks like (see below). I read that the stuff described as general purpose is exactly the same as what Dupont sells as "chain lube" but you get more for your money in this can.

McMaster Carr carries it if you don't have a Lowes nearby (we only have the other two crappy big box stores).

I do not care for the Teflon stuff because it will only lubricate but has little to no corrosion protection. This is why I like the chain Wax.It has protected my chain perfectly and there is also no sling-off. Liquid Wrench now also has one. You can buy that almost anywhere including Harbor Freight.
