73 Z1 qestion
18 Apr 2011 22:59
Is this just a 73 Z1 (frame no.Z1F-022XX, engine no.Z1E-022XX) with a bunch of after-market add-ons or is it something else. The guy I bought it from said it had a one piece fiberglass gas tank/ body work held on by one bolt in the rear. So far the things I have found to be non stock are; Morris aluminum wheels, dual disc front brakes, oil cooler, Koni rear shocks, frame bracing and, rear disc brake. I am not sure what I want to do with it yet, any suggestions.

Hello, Jeff, and WELCOME to KZr!
Might have been an after-market "Tracy" body.
Rear M/C seems held on with U-bolt, and can't see the caliper.
Only stock Morris rear wheel is on KZ900-B1 LTD, which is a 16" wheel.
Perhaps not a genuine "Morris" wheel. Does it have the small "M" trademark cast into the wheel?
Good Fortune!

I'm not sure what the 'something else' might be as it appears to be a 1973 Z1...period (with a bunch of aftermarket or later edition Kawasaki parts). Two suggestions...(1) flip the bike for top dollar right now, or (2) restore it to stock (which is the one I'd personally choose). A third suggestion (already asked by wireman) is 'sell it to me'.

Probably a Tracy body unless it's a one off special, Tracy body's are rare as not too many made it out of the 80's. Looks like a Hearst Airheart rear brake kit and those did come with the u clip hardware back in the day. 73's are worth a bunch more than your average basket case Z and with serial numbers like you posted I'd be looking at the vin tag on the frame neck as the really early ones are even more valuable- pre 10/72 build date I think.
Just think with a bagfull of $$$ and time your bike could look like this:

Thanks for the information everyone. The wheels have an M inside of a circle with an I in the middle (see attachment), are these Morris wheels? The rear brake is a Hurst Airheart. The date code on the vin is 11/7_, the last number is unreadable but is most likely a 2. The forks appear to be straight when checked with a straight edge. I have not seen the body work but the guy I bought this from still has it and may be willing to sell it, he also said this motorcycle was used for roadracing by the owner before him and that he converted it to street use. If it is a Tracy body does anyone have an idea what it is worth? I am trying to decide if I want to restore this with the fiberglass body and other after-market parts, or with stock body work and the after-market parts. I have a couple of other project bikes a '78 Z1R, and a '82 GPZ 1100, not sure where to start.

This was a top notch bike in it's day! Someone put alot of $ into it, just think, it might have made laps at Daytona during bike speedweek!
Nice history behind it. Maybe there are some good internals also, or it could be all rusted and pitted, Kenny Harmon cams, Yoshi pistons, welded crank, oil gate in the sump etc.
But sell it off on ebay, make some money! JMO UNLESS YOU GOT 4 OR 5 THOU AND 2 OR 3 YEARS TO RESTORE IT, DOING ALL THE WORK YOURSELF!

Thanks for the close-ups.
Yes, the wheels do indeed appear to be genuine Morris Mags.
