It's probably immaterial, but the exaust studs should be 8mm on a 79, not 6mm. In any case, be careful. The heat cycling of the studs tends to weaken them over time. martin_csr is right, I see lots of heads with broken exhaust studs on ebay.

tighten them until they snap, then back off 1/4 turn.

I'll be sure to be very careful with the exhaust studs than, don't want any of them snapped off! I'm putting new rubber on and balancing the wheels tomorrow, so hopefully the cycle will be back back together and ridable this weekend!
