I have a 38T 530 series rear sprocket and chain (both worn, but probably serviceable) that I have absolutely no use for. They came of an '80 750G and you can have them both for the price of shipping.

That's very generous of you. I've actually got a rear sprocket on the way. Ordering it was almost a knee jerk reaction to seeing this sprocket.

I'm just trying to figure out whether or not I should put it on with the old chain or hold onto it until I can replace the chain as well. I'll get a look at the engine sprocket tonight.

Free (plus shipping) are the following off an '80 KZ750G (twin)
-Swingarm
-Chain (well used but a good spare and still serviceable)
-Rear sprocket (530 series, 38T)
-Chain Guard (pitted, but could be cleaned up)

I acquired these parts when I bought my mags off another member and I have no use for any of them. I don't want to fool with EBay and I would rather see someone make use of these parts or have some much needed spares rather than try to make a few bucks.

It's been a while, but figured it was worth an update. I did decide to wait and replace chain and rear sprocket together as many of you suggested (thanks for that).

The engine sprocket actually looked pretty good. It seems to have been replaced fairly recently and seems to be bigger than stock. It measured about 74mm and my manual says standard is 71.01-71.22 with a service limit of 70.2. The teeth appear good so I left it.

What would be gained by a larger front sprocket?

The chain on the bike was a non o-ring and continuous loop type. What are the chances this was the original chain from 1979? You've seen the sprocket after all! The bike has about 17,000 miles on it.

I replaced the chain with an o-ring type with a master link. I didn't want to dissasemble everything down to the swing arm to get the old chain off, so I went over to a buddy's and we tried a big chain breaker on it. This is one of those that's supposed to force out one of the pins so the chain comes apart.

Well, we broke the breaker and the pin barely budged. The chain breaker was brand new and pretty big and substantial but it literally snapped in two.

I ended up cutting the old chain off with an angle grinder equipped with a cutting wheel.

End of story, new chain, new rear sprocket. Bit of a mystery about the larger than stock front sprocket.

Thanks as always for all the help!

I just bought the bike a couple months ago, been trying to look it over and fix/replace what I find as I can afford the parts.

It would be the three previous owners that neglected the chain and sprocket. I'll do my best!
