'79 mags to '74 spokes was created by Robwolf
Rob here, my '79 KZ400H needs a new front tube, so the wheel is coming off soon. I have a set of wheels from a '74 KZ400B. Now the H's set are mag, 19" front 16" rear. Single disk and drum. The B's set are spoked 18" front and rear. Also single disk and drum. I'd like to swap to these spoked wheels.

I've already attempted to change the front wheel out once and got disheartened when I noticed that I'd be loosing the better disk that my '79 has (the spacing on the mounting bolts is different) and saw that the speedo is mounted on the right instead of left.

The question is, other than routing the speedo cable down the other side (the spoked wheels have their speedo thankfully), is there anything else I may need to look out for?

You can probably find an answer quicker over at

www.kz400.com

Good reference site for the 400s and has a link to a forum that is very helpful. I had a '75 KZ400D that was on stock spokes and just did a spoke to mag swap on my Z1 900. It can be a little trickier than you may think , but I know a couple members at the 400 site have done this and could probably walk you through it. Good luck.

I actually used that site's manuals for doing some work. Discovered that the disk is thicker too. I think I might just sell these spokes and try to find a set that would be more direct install. I live in an apartment so it's very hard for me to do any serious modification. Wish I could :D

Where are you located? I know a guy who has 3 complete KZ400 parts bikes in Southern OH and has really good prices. He will ship too.
