1980 Kz750 Front end swap to 2000 zx7r
15 Feb 2011 18:13 - 01 Mar 2011 17:18
I am starting a build and was wondering if anyone has information on swaping a 96-03 kawasaki ninja zx7 inverted front fork onto a 79 kz750 four. I know I will have to press out the necks. but can you repress the kz stem into the zx7 lower triple with out much machining? I am building a cafe racer with 04 gsxr rear end and zx7 front end. Still in engineering stage. Your knowledge will be of greatest help. Thanks Aaron

That's a KZ750H, first year model was 1980, if you ask for 79 KZ750 parts or info it will be for a 750 twin.
That's the manufactured date on the headstock, not the model year.
If the original Zx7 stem is long enough, then bearings are probably available from All Balls to adapt it to the 80 KZ750H frame. That's what I usually do.
I've never swapped steering stems, haven't had the need yet.

Sorry, Yes it is a 1980 KZ750H four. Manufactured on 11/79. The stem is not long enough due to the lower threads being under the lip of the kz stem. I will need to press out the stem and insert the kz into the zx7 Triple. Anybody do this before with much luck? Thanks Aaron

I have seen stems cut, extended, then welded back together to make them longer.
Just another option to consider.
You might take a look at the front end swaps section at www.750turbo.com . I think the Turbo frame neck is the same size as yours.
And you should probably measure the overall lengths of both forks, rumor has it that the Zx7 forks are to short for the 750.

I did mine by pressing the KZ stem out from the original clamp. You have to grind out the weld on the bottom of the clamp before you can press it out. I then machined a spacer to adapt the KZ stem diameter to the new lower clamp, and pressed the old stem into the new clamp. Oh yeah, I also welded the spacer to the stem for insurance. Granted my bike is a KZ1000 and the donor fork is from a 95 GSXR 750. Yours shouldn't be too different. Many people just cut the stem off in the lower triple clamp from the donor fork and just machine it to a press fit over the KZ stem to accomplish the same thing.

i recently completed a stem conversion from zx7 to kz 1000.i was able to polish the inside (it was steel) of the zx7 stem and cut the top off and then mill it down flat with the triple surface then pressed the kz stem in until the shoulder bottomed out and welded the two together.
shoot me a pm if i can help you.

So! I have made some progress on this build. I took my KZ750H stem grounded off the old weld, cut two very shallow channels on either side of the lower triple tree. Then used a rock chisel and some force with a sledge to split the rest. Then used the sledge on the old lower triple ONLY, to brake the old weld free. The stem then pulled out through the bottom of the triple with ease. I am in the process of pressing the stem from my 00 ZX7 Triple. I will use that as stock to cut and machine a new spacer for the kz stem to press fit into. I am then planning on drilling a tapped hole through the whole thing for safety. To be continued................
