Lots of differing opinions, Please allow me to throw gas on the flame....The Valving on most "conventional" shocks is simply the diameter of hole in the "damper rod" located in the lower fork leg inside he fork tube.allowing oil to re-locate from the inside cavity of tube & lower leg up the fork tube. Oil quantity & viscostity determine rate of travel & amount. Honda (most noticibly)on many models used & rec'd ATF (which in the day was @ 5W)& was easily recognised in exiting by its cherry red color, ATF in the day, had some nice qualities... It retained its viscosity for 1, & had a low surface tension (the bubbles broke up ) thus resisted "foaming",Bel-ray Marketed for years, & still may, "seal with swell" an additive which may or not keep seals soft.& were avail. in multiple viscositys & allowed mixxing for fine tuning....Then came Anti-dive...Which in most instances became worthless with conventional fork oils in short order. Thus the change by many to conventional eng oil (20/50 whatever) which was thick enough to make the Anti-dives work.. use what you will, Just know why...G
