Rear drum brake or disk?
Have you done a recent chain adjustment or otherwise loosened the rear axle?
Does the bike have a center stand? It's kinda handy for checking stuff like this.
I guess the motorcycle is new to you?

i have a clymer manual it shows taking the pipes off where they bolt into the engine so ill follow that but i thought i had to take them off because they extend past where i need the room to pull the axle through? in the manual for taking the axle out it has pipes that stop before the axle bolt not my model. 93 kz1000 police model
Clymer manuals aren't very good, Kawasaki manuals are much better. Having said that, the mufflers on my KZ650 extend well beyond the rear axle. I simply remove the axle nut and loosen the torque link; shove the rear wheel & axle forward and disengage the chain; then slide the rear wheel and axle to the rear and let it drop out of the swingarm. Then I can easily pull the axle free from the wheel & rear caliper bracket. I've done this more than a dozen times and find it quite easy. If you cannot do this on your model, you should try removing one end of the rear shocks to let the swingarm drop down to give clearance to pull the axle. I've had my '77 KZ650 since new and have not yet ever pulled the exhaust, but I believe pulling the exhaust system will be a major pain in the butt, plus you'll need new exhaust gaskets to prevent leaks. What's usually done is that you don't really pull the axle out, but instead, remove the entire rear wheel assembly as a unit.... wheel assy, axle, axle spacers, & chain adjusters.i have a clymer manual it shows taking the pipes off where they bolt into the engine so ill follow that but i thought i had to take them off because they extend past where i need the room to pull the axle through? in the manual for taking the axle out it has pipes that stop before the axle bolt not my model. 93 kz1000 police model
Loosen the rear axle/nut and loosen/&/or/remove the chain adjuster nuts n stuff, kick the wheel forward so that the chain can be lifted off the rear sprocket, then slide the rear wheel off. After you loosen the chain adjuster stuff, you'll figure it out.
