OK, you go to Kawasaki and buy fork seals with a part number you got from the Kawi website (p/n 92049-1295) and they are too big. I make arraignments to exchange them when the Kawi dealer gets another batch. In the mean time, I buy some online after again checking the part number(92049-1295).........and they also are too big!. There is no way that the part number is wrong since for 1981 both the J1 and CSR1000 use these seals AND the aftermarket has them listed as 38mm x 50mm x 8/9.5mm which is what I need. The 81GPZ1100 uses p/n 92049-1178 which is dimensionally identical to -1295 per the Z1 specialties website. The '81 KZ1000LTD calls for p/n 92049-1102 (superceded by -1178). Could Kawi have distributed alot of these improperly sized fork seals?. Do any of you have Kawi parts books to check this out?. The icing on the cake is i ride out 20 miles to the not-so-local Kawi dealer to pick up my replacement seals and he gives me 92049-1180...ANOTHER part number with the correct I.D. and O.D. but they are 1.5mm thicker and list for a KLR650. The fun never ends!

When in doubt, GAS IT!!

no visible part number on the original seals. I did use aftermarket seals for the time being, but prefer O.E.M. for longevity.

longevity is relative. my question is do you really need a fork seal that last another 30 years? At $15 I think they can wear out in 5-10 years and you will have got your moey's worth.

The seal size is 38mm x50mm the thickness can be between 8mm-9.5mm. I have found that the K&S seals are the best, even better than the OE seals. They can be bought threw Z1E for $7.20 a set and # is KS16-1032. These bikes with these forks are EXTREMELY sensitive to pits. Even one tinny pit or scratch will make them leak like mad. I don't know why these forks are like that. Believe me, I have a lot of experience with these 38mm forks.

You may not have the original forks. Measure the tube and slider to confirm.

These are GPZ1100 forks and mic out at 38mm. The dims are supposed to be 38mm x 50mm x 8/9.5 just like the aftermarket seals I installed measured out to AND Z1 enterprizes site mentions. The kawi seals measured I got in the package measured 40.3mm x 55.2mm x 10.8mm. These are the wrong seal. I wonder if anybody has some of these in the original bag and will confirm that mine are mislabeled.

Having Kawasaki mistakenly package a part wrong is not probable, having 2 mistakes is a billion to one. Something else going on here.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
