kz 900 rear wheel bearing removal
09 Jan 2011 17:42
the manual says to use a drift and tap them out from the other side by tapping on the inner race. i planned on just repacking and reinstaling. seems to me this would ruin the bearing any help out there thx

Get a propane torch and carefully go around the bearing on the hub. Prop the wheel so the bearing will drive out(usually 2"x4"s or 4"x 4"s)Using a socket to fit the outside of the bearing, drive the bearing out.
If the bearing feels "Gritty" as it turns or makes noise, replace it.Take a drift and hammer and work it out of the hub.
www.goallball.com sells a selection of bearings.
When installing new bearings, put the new one in the freezer for about 1 hour, when ready, heat up the hub with the torch and the new bearing should almost drop in.
A socket and extension can be used with a hammer to seat the bearing in the hub. Avoid beating on the inside of the bearing as it will be ruined.......

Wheel bearing kits are pretty cheap, way better to put in new ones. Do it once. MFolks is spot on, get em cold and install on the outer race only.

Don't know about the 900 but just did the rear wheel on my 1000 there is a snap ring needs to be removed, I was unable to get a drift anywhere inside do to the distance collar, they definately need to be punched out and not in, as there is a shoulder on the inside of the rim on both sides, behind the bearing.

if your going to take the time to remove them, replace them with new ones, they are not that expensive. Im not a big fan of take it out and put it back in, too many chances to damage them and not know it until its too late
