sprocket recommendations
06 Jan 2011 13:44
am beginning to reassemble bike, and need a new rear sprocket, I'd like to hear some thoughts on the subject in reference to number of teeth, front sprocket is stock, I know a few things, others know more
Z1 with 1015 kit and Suzuki GS 1100 swingarm, running a 150 rear tire, the swingarm adds a little over an inch and a half to length,
recommendations ???

im guessing you had a tire somewhere in neighborhood of a 130/90/18 origionally, which comes out to around around 117mm x2 or 234 on an 18" rim.
versus 120mm x2 or 240 on your 16" rim,im thinking the 16 will actually end up being slightly shorter(unless my math is jacked up :S  )
if youre spending a lot of time loaded down or riding hills/mountains i think the stock gearing with that rear wheel would actually give you a little bit lower gearing, which would be a good thing but it would run out of top end a little quicker

thats just a semi educated guess,so you might want to experiment with 1 tooth less if it doesnt give you enough topend on the interstate at a reasonable rpm.

gonna try a 33 for awhile and see, they are not overly expensive, I'm toying with the idea of getting a highway specific sprocket (and probably longer chain) and just switch out when I go off the mountain for a road trip, seems the most logical idea
thanx for the responses

Thanks for posting that! I'm thinking about dropping one tooth on the countershaft sprocket and that website gave all the info that I needed.

if you can swing an extra wheel with same gearing and slightly taller tire to keep in the corner to swap out for long trips might be even easier for ya.
