My Clymer manual does not show the small plate on the chain cover that is in this photo. Can anyone tell me if this mart is from a newer then 1980 KZ1000? what does this cover do? I am surprised the manual does not show this part.

Behind that cover is the adjuster that controls the gap between the rod pusher component (that gets pulled by the clutch cable) and the clutch rod itself.
Adjust the cable loose at the lever, and at the cable halfway point. Then adjust the rod adjustment behind the plate by unscrewing the nut, then backing the screw out loose, then turn it in lightly, just until it stops. back it off about 1/16th of a turn and hold it in that position with your screwdriver and re tighten the nut. Do not overtighten!
Then set the lever about mid-point, and adjust the mid cable linkage till there is about 1/8th inch at the lever free-play. Lock the cable linkage and make your final adjustment for feel via the lever adjustment.
Good luck!

It should be in the manual under clutch cable adjustment.

back it off about 1/16th of a turn
Would endorse above except for wondering about only 1/16th of a turn, because FSM for earlier models specifies 1/2 turn.
Good Fortune!
