clutch stuck - help identifying part?
13 Dec 2010 13:05
I have a 1980 KZ1000LTD chain dr. that I am restoring. The clutch will not disengage. The cable moves fine. I took out all plates, cleaned, oiled and replaced. All is good there. The part where the cable attaches moves when the cable is pulled. It moves about 1/4 inch so I assume it moves the rod.
My Clymer manual does not show the small plate on the chain cover that is in this photo. Can anyone tell me if this mart is from a newer then 1980 KZ1000? what does this cover do? I am surprised the manual does not show this part.

It should be in the manual under clutch cable adjustment.
Behind that cover is the adjuster that controls the gap between the rod pusher component (that gets pulled by the clutch cable) and the clutch rod itself.
Adjust the cable loose at the lever, and at the cable halfway point. Then adjust the rod adjustment behind the plate by unscrewing the nut, then backing the screw out loose, then turn it in lightly, just until it stops. back it off about 1/16th of a turn and hold it in that position with your screwdriver and re tighten the nut. Do not overtighten!
Then set the lever about mid-point, and adjust the mid cable linkage till there is about 1/8th inch at the lever free-play. Lock the cable linkage and make your final adjustment for feel via the lever adjustment.
Good luck!

Would endorse above except for wondering about only 1/16th of a turn, because FSM for earlier models specifies 1/2 turn.
Good Fortune!

I'll give it a try. Is this small cover shown in your manual?

Here's a manual for 1981 models, I'd imagine a lot of information is the same for your bike:

Lots of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc.
Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.

This was all very helpful. Thank you. My manual is different, so while my bike is a 1980, the clutch assembly is like the 1981.
