Rebuilding a spoke wheel - truing stand
25 Nov 2010 09:43
I'm considering rebuilding the front spoke wheel on my '88 KZ305. I found a
great article
on this from web bike world, but there's one piece I need more info on.
I need some ideas about how to rig up a truing stand. I can't weld so I imagine I would need to set up some means of holding the axle on a workshop table or something. The article, which is otherwise quite thorough, says almost nothing about this.
Does anyone have any pictures of their own truing stands they could share?
Thanks!

I just re-laced and trued these wheels for a guy - 63 Honda C200... they were really small hubs so I was able to get away with my bicycle wheel stand.

I designed this combo truing/balancing stand to do larger wheels - I already have the steel... just have to get it welded... total investment = $9
Instead of steel tubing you could use 2x2 wood... you really don't have to pin down the axles unless your really wailing on the nipples... but at that point you should back off because they are probably "too" tight.

You could always just mount the rim to the forks where it belongs, and true it there.

I don't have a great work space that will fit the whole bike so without an extra set of forks, I'll need some sort of stand. Some of these examples look pretty easy to build. Thanks for the examples.

I've never had the opportunitity to lace wheels on a road bike, but I have done several dirtbike wheels, and I don't bother with a truing stand. I use the wheel's axle clamped verticle in a vice, slide the wheel over the axle and use a dial indicator. Works fine for me. Able to true wheels within .015" axial and radial runout

I hadn't thought about doing it vertically. That's an interesting idea.
