Can I lower my KZ1000? was created by pidaster
I have a 98 Police 1000. Seat height is 31 inches. I have a bad knee and this has caused me to drop it once already (knee buckles at certain angles). I think if I can lower it about 2-3 inches it would give me a better angle with my knee to avoid this. I plan on removing the fairing and saddle bags also. Welding, grinding, and painting are all okay to do with me. I just don't know where to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as if I can't lower it then I will have to sell it for a bike with a lower seat height.

I believe the stock shock length on your bike is 13 1/2". From what I remember, the shortest shock that you can put on there is 11" before running into clearance issues.

You can pick up shorter shocks for very cheap on eBay. A popular swap is to grab Harley Sportster shocks, which are usually shorter in length, and put those on.

Check the archives for more information on this swap. Its real simple, involving little more than swapping the bushings.

Not sure if this will work with your type of seat, but check out the thread I started called made my seat lower , it might help, and theres always the option of reworking the subframe and making a custom seat;)

I lowered my 78 1000 by putting in a set of lowering tubes from schnitzracing.com for the forks and a set of shock relocators on the back. It lowered it about 2 inches. Only thingis watch out for clearance issues. The first time you scrape your exhaust make sure you have an extra pair of underpants to change into. Also, my bike is so low now I have to jack it up to change the oil cuz the pan won't fit under the header.

I've done alot of research on this. For the front I can't find any lowering blocks to go in the forks but I could slide the tubes in approx one inch, need to rebuild the front forks anyway. For the rear, the best option seems to go with the Sportster shocks. I'll also make a custom seat but for now I think I'll just cut some foam out.
All that sound ok?

try searching(on here) for a PVC spacer for putting in the fork tubes to lower them, I know a few guys have done it

Schnitz still sells the lowering blocks for fork tubes and my MKll has a set of the rear shock lower mounts which relocate the shocks rearward.Lowered the bike about 2" overall- I'm 6'1" and MKll's are tall even with those mods.

If you use shorter tubes but keep the stock length springs, won't compress the springs thus making the handling tighter? You have a link on that site for these tubes?
