1980 B4 speedo drive question
26 Oct 2010 18:11
Gotta hand it to the old girl. Made it all the way through the season with nary a glitch.
But alas, the speedo drive gear has apparently went tits up on me. Speedo jumps when I twist the cable with my fingers, but she no go roundy round when hooked up to the drive.
Fleabay is show a shiny NOS one, but the guy says it fits an '82-2005 police bike.
Anybody know if it will fit my 1980 LTD B4?
He also lists what appears to be two different part numbers:
41078-1013 and 41046-1006.

Forgive this question, but is for certain the speedo drive is faulty and not simply a worn out inner cable?
Hoping for the more typical cheap and simple solution of a new speedo cable.
Good Fortune!

If needed, here's how to navigate and find the correct part number on kawasaki.com, and which models share the same part number, etc.

I'm almost certain it's the drive gear Patton, but now that you mention it, I suppose the posibilty exists that the square end isn't so square anymore. I'll check on that tomorrow.
But I took it loose from the bottom and spun the cable with my fingers and the speedo did jump. But it's also possible I inadvertantly shoved the cable up further into the speedo, wher it might've engaged a less worn section of the square end.

If not already done, could also try spinning the front wheel with cable attached at lower end but unattached at speedo end, and see whether speedo end of inner cable turns firm and steady with rotation of front wheel.

If the inner cable will pull out of the sheath, could do so and inspect for fraying, lack of lube, or other obvious defect.

Well, I just pulled the cable out. Nice a greasy, end looks nice and square. I put back in and spun the cable in the speedo, and the needle jumps like it should. The I pulled the top end loose and stuck the slotted end in the drive and atempted to turn it. I could spin it clockwise, but not counter clockwise. Maybe the engaement dogs are worn, I dunno.
Aw hell, as if I ever worry about speed limits...:silly:
I' ll raise thr front end up tomorrow. Goin to bed now. Thanks Patton. I can always count on you!

Z1KZonly, I don't think a pic would help. They all look alike...
