Are these Mulholland shocks?
22 Oct 2010 14:06
I'm enjoying riding my '79 LTD now that the carb tuning is in the ballpark.
The back end rides like a hardtail. I think these are the stock Mulholland shocks, want to check and see what others think.
If they are the stock shocks, is there anything worthwhile doing with them? For example, putting softer springs on them? I weigh about 175 lbs.
And if they should be trashed, what AFFORDABLE shocks are recommended? I'm thinking about Progressives but they look so plain. Works looks nice but $$$. How about YSS or Hagon?
Thanks, Mike

Not sure what brand those are. Is there a chance that the shocks are adjusted to there stiffest setting? If they are indeed trashed i have heard nothing but great things about Hagon shocks.

Konis usually have a ramped preload collar, these look like S&W's (hood over top of spring) or maybe Monroe. Both are quality aftermarket shocks. Maybe a rebuild is in order, or possibly the spring rate is wrong for your weight.

Yeah I also thought they look like S&W's. First time I saw the bike I thought I'd scored on the shocks. As mentioned in the first post, the back end rides like a hardtail. The springs are set with the minimum preload. Something is wrong.
I think I'll check with Z1 Enterprises and see about getting some lighter springs.

Not sure what brand they are, but they are not stock. This picture shows my stock 1979 ltd 1000 Mulholland set up. I would guess they are S&W but not sure.

Okay I figured it out! I was reading a motorcycle magazine today and it had an ad for Progressive Suspension shocks. The top of the shock in the ad looked just like my shocks.
I went home, took a closer look at the shocks and on the springs there's a small logo that says Progressive Suspension
1394 75/120
So I wonder why the handling is not all that great? No wobbles or anything, just doesn't seem like the rear end is very compliant with bumps. The spring rate, I think that would be okay? Maybe it's that big 16" rear tire. The profile is fairly flat too.
Well it's been a long time since I rode a KZ. Last one I had was an '83 ELR which I sold in 1988.
Just picked this '79 LTD up in June and started riding it in the last couple of weeks as the carburetion was sorted out.
So if you have any tips on handling improvements let me know! I do have an 18" spoke rear wheel I'm planning to put on the KZ in the near future.
